Panel discussion: Immigration in Dutchess County

Separated from his family, Valentino Achak Deng becomes a refugee in war ravaged southern Sudan. His travels bring him in contact with enemy soldiers, with liberation rebels, with hyenas and lions, with disease and starvation and with deadly murahaleen (militias on horseback) – the same sort who terrorize Dafur. His talk will describe his experiences as a refugee in the civil war in Sudan and his view of the situation in both Sudan and Darfur. His experiences became the basis of Dave Egger’s novel, What is the What, which was named as a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
